Covered Bridges of West Virginia

Travel down West Virginia’s country roads with photographer Steve Shaluta and relish the view as he skillfully points his camera lens upon the state’s covered bridges. Shaluta’s photographs of the state and its seventeen remaining covered bridges are magnificent. They evoke images of a time gone by, when horses and wagons traveled these bridges to cross local creeks or do business at the mill. And so are they named: Herns Mill, Simpson Creek, Fish Creek, Hokes Mill, and so forth. At one time there were probably over 100 covered bridges in the state; today we are fortunate to have the remaining seventeen, which are being protected and restored. At the same time these portraits depict tremendous West Virginia landscapes during all four seasons.
