State authors Davis and Knost to appear at Tamarack on Sat., July 13th

BECKLEY, W.Va. - West Virginia authors F. Keith Davis and Bram Stoker Award-Winner Michael Knost will appear at Tamarack, the Best of West Virginia, this Sat., July 13th from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.


Willis Hatfield

MULLENS, W.Va. - Emmanuel Wilson "Willis" Hatfield, son of the noted feudist, "Devil Anse" Hatfield, was once a deputy and jailer in Logan County.

Later, Willis spent time in prison in Moundsville, WV, for killing Dr. Edwin O. Thornhill, aged 35, a well-know physician and businessman. Dr. Thornhill was shot dead on December 31st, 1911 in a small drugstore at Mullens, WV.

Sat., July 6th Book Release: The Wiz of the West, launches at The Gallery


VIENNA, W.Va — The Gallery will host a special book event—a national release party—of the new title, The Wiz of the West, at their Grand Central Mall location on Sat., July 6, from 2:00 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The author of the new book, S. Clayton Rhodes, will appear at the store to greet the public and sign copies of the volume during the activity.

According to Woodland Press, the Mountain State independent publisher of the title, The Wiz of the West is a charming and humorous alternate take on the classic Wizard of Oz story.

SHEPHARD HATFIELD: Another casualty of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud?

Cap Hatfield (shown in this image) was still on the run during the years 1889 to 1903. Cap's second son, Shepherd Hatfield, died at that time, apparently a victim of malnutrition. Later in his life, Coleman A. Hatfield, Cap's first son, recalled that sad period in an interview with his son, Coleman C. Hatfield.

Woodland Press CEO receives WVW JUG Award

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. - Keith Davis, CEO of Woodland Press, an independent book publishing firm located in Chapmanville, was one of the recipients of the prestigious 2013 WVW JUG Awards (JUG stands for "Just Uncommonly Good"), awarded on Saturday evening, June. 8th at their annual summer conference held at Cedar Lakes Conference Center, near Ripley, WV. Mountain State author Cat Pleska accepted the award in his behalf at their conference banquet.
